When you think of the word, ‘meditate’, yoga and chanting often comes to mind, but did you know that we all meditate daily? Yes, it is true that what you focus on becomes bigger. When you worry about the bills, they become more urgent and when you put that focus on that, you miss solutions because you are so focused on the problem.

What does that have to do with meditation? Well when you purposely focus your thoughts on a specific pattern, such as counting your breathing or chanting, your mind will slowly be able to focus on other things such as solutions.


What Is Meditation?


According to Merriam-Webster, meditation is engaging in contemplation or reflection. So when you think, you meditate. But what you don’t realize is the power you really have over your thoughts. People go through the day reacting, but if you take five and meditate, you can focus on how you want to take charge of situations that may or may not occur.


18 Million People Meditate


According to the National Health Interview Study, eight percent, or 18 million people in the US alone meditate daily. What they are doing is simply focusing their attention. But, when you day dream, you meditate also. When you plan your day while balancing a schedule, your attention is focused on that. My attention is focused on writing this post.

And this above statistic does not include the people who do yoga (and odds are they incorporate meditation with their poses). Often music or chanting is involved with meditation and it’s been proven that the beat of a drum or the rhythmic song of a didgeridoo can induce a trance state. I’ve had this happen with the didgeridoo and it was a very intense experience.

I had a friend in Atlanta back in 2011 approach me and offer to play her didgeridoo. I had no idea what this would entail but agreed. New experiences and all of that. We met up in the square in Little 5 where it is very public. People every where. She pulled out a chair from one of the shops and told me to sit down. I was very self conscious because people were standing and staring.

Then she began to play and dance. Immediately I was taken to another world where I saw all these beings in a long line like they were waiting on something. I asked them what they were waiting on and they said, “Your mother is coming home,” My mother was in the hospital this weekend. She’d had open heart surgery 8 months prior to this event and her recovery was not going well.

Needless to say, I argued with the being who said, ” By the time the first leaf of autumn falls and touches the ground, your mother will be with us,” and I was immediately released from the trance. Nora, my friend, told me I’d been sitting in that chair for a while after she’d stopped.

The next day the doctor told me my mother had less than 6 months to live. This was on Mother’s Day. My mother died on Labor Day, 2011. The official holiday for the end of summer.

My point in all of this is that meditation can help you access higher knowledge and also it can help you focus on what you want for your life. Meet your goals and make your dreams come true.


Benefits of Meditation


There are many benefits of meditation that include stress relief and helping with anxiety. Perhaps this is why I’ve been calmer about going through some things that would have broken me a few years ago. I meditated my way through my mother’s death–my work family were the ones who helped me pay for her cremation and trip to Louisiana to scatter her remains into the Mississippi.

Meditation even helps you to increase your attention span. In fact 4 days of meditation enhances your ability to sustain attention. The more you focus your attention the easier it becomes. As they say, it gets better with practice. Kirtan Kryia meditation is a technique that requires only 12 minutes a day and has been proven to help patients with Alzheimer’s improve their memory.

Another benefit, which I have experienced before, is that it will help you control your blood pressure. I was with a friend when we were rear ended and I was injured. However, my blood pressure was normal. During being treated by paramedics and taken to the hospital, I was visualizing my blood pressure being stable. A study was performed on patients who used deep breathing techniques to lower their blood pressure. Analysis were performed on over 21,000 people and results actually showed that after meditating, their blood pressure was lowered.

This is the power of meditation. This is the power of creativity. So when you say, ‘Sa Ta Na Ma’ which means ‘my true essence’ or ‘my true identity’ you are reaffirming that you are truly you.
