Why Are You Here?
Many people struggle with their self-worth and their purpose in life. “God has a plan for your life” is a phrase that is often told to us by churches all across America. After all, you are here for a reason. So am I. Sometimes finding your ‘true purpose’ is a daunting task, much like finding happiness, but if you realize that your purpose and happiness are linked and that there is no set rule to be happy, then you will discover that you don’t have a purpose.
What Makes You Happy?
What is it that gives you that exhilarating feeling of joy–that sense of rightness? What makes you feel alive? What do you love? These are clues. Is it just one thing that gives you this rush or many? You, like me, would probably say ‘many.’
I love listening to music. I love writing (writing pays my bills). I love making jewelry, collecting gemstones and blogging about them. I love taking photos of my work and I love how the setting sun filters into my work making my art even more beautiful–at least to me. I love that feeling of contentment when I edit a photo of my jewelry and see a masterpiece before me. I love the feel of my kitten’s fur as he twines around my feet. I may have to walk slower so I don’t accidentally step on him, but I love these little moments.
You don’t have a purpose. You have purposes. Plural. Let’s look at Elon Musk. He wants to go to Mars. So he builds rockets. But in order to fund that, he had to generate funds so he started coding. He was a part of Paypal which sold to Ebay for millions. He co-founded Tesla, an electric car company that is changing the world today. All because he felt the drive to make humans a multiplanetary species. This one drive resulted in many purposes.
Our purposes may not be as grand as getting us to Mars but each person has many purposes in live and some are simply to impact others. Every purpose stems from one thing though: creation. Our purposes are to create whether it is a solution to a problem, a piece of art, or a new world, (Mars). We have this drive to just create. And this is why you have more than one purpose. Does an artist stop at one painting? Does a musician stop with just one song? No. We keep creating.
Fighting The Depression
Many people get so caught up in the mundane. We go to work, go home, go to work, go home and we sleep a lot because work is stressful. Many, like I did at Goodwill, work jobs at a low pay with a demanding work schedule that leaves us completely exhausted–too tired to do what we love. Many people get depressed either by the mundane or having some type of trauma. Trauma is the worst. Let’s take my story for example. In 2016, I was happily married with my own store. I had a good partnership with a friend (who I am still friends with) and the mall our store was located in closed in 2017.
So my then husband and I moved to Houston to try something new. He got a job interview in North Carolina and we went there. Something told me to pack as much as I could–that I wouldn’t be returning to Houston. I listened. What we left behind was lost to Hurricane Harvey. I got phone calls saying “your store is under water” and texts from neighbors saying that our neighborhood was flooded. 2018 came and I found out the hard way that our comfortable life we had just settled into in NC was a lie.
My husband was planning with one of his girlfriends to leave me stranded and homeless. A person who I lived with, was married to and loved deeply wanted to hurt me by abandoning me in such a way that I would have had nothing. The story is long and twisted and he had already kicked me out but just to show how devious this plan was his reason was that he was out of the country and didn’t have money for me to pay rent and I had a job offer in Atlanta with an old friend so I took it. I was in Atlanta when I found out his original plan with his girlfriend in Canada.
I wanted to die. I was completely devastated. I literally said “fuck it” and prepared to take my life. I had the pills in my hand when my phone started going off–and it didn’t’ stop with just one notification. I simply stared at my phone willing it to stop so I could just finish, but it wouldn’t stop. I later learned that you shouldn’t enable your push notifications on Twitter if you are going to interact with Elon Musk. When he replies to your tweets, millions of people reply to you.
At the exact moment I was about to end my life, the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla replied to one of my tweets. Sometimes the Divine, God, Universe, that higher power you believe in has to step in when you are about to make a decision that is completely wrong–this jolt happens to stop us from doing something disastrous. Some people listen and some do not. I did. I had a choice before me: end my life or rebuild it. Ending it would have been the easy thing to do.
I made the hardest choice I ever had to make in my life: I chose to live. All of my belongings fit into one suitcase. I, like my mother before me, hit the reset button. I settled in Baton Rouge, the capital of the state I am from, and a new city that I’d never lived in before. I rebuilt my life and today I work from home–writing full time. I’m a cat mom, an artist who listens to Alex Boye, Prince EA, Ralph Smart and makes jewelry. I’m happier than I have ever been.
See the thing is, you don’t have one purpose. You have many and it’s not to benefit others. You are here for your. Your purpose is to be happy–which isn’t that hard to do. Just start by doing something you love even if it’s for 5-10 minutes each day. Mix paints and just go crazy on canvas–it doesn’t have to look like any shape. Just enjoy the flow of the brush stroking the colors onto the canvas. Your purposes are to create a beautiful life for yourself.
How To Find Your Purposes.
I love Ralph Smart and love how he breaks this down. Many people are envious of people like Ralph, Elon Musk and others who are going out there and making their dreams come true. “Elon Musk is a billionaire. I have to work–I don’t have time to launch rockets” you may say, but Elon wasn’t always a billionaire. In fact, if you think like Elon does then you will find your life mirroring his in a way. I mean, you will see yourself solving problems and making your dreams come true.
“Your purpose will find you when you gravitate towards whatever makes you most happy.”
Elon didn’t become a billionaire by wanting to go to Mars, but he coded his way there. And every penny that he has made has been invested into his dream. This is why SpaceX is successful. This is a guy who went to Russia to buy nukes (de-weaponized) so he could make his dream of going to Mars come true. He got spat on so instead of feeling pity, he taught himself rocket science. Where there is a will, there is a way–Elon’s way of looking at and doing things is proof of this. And the fact that he took the time to comfort me when he found out that I almost took my life just shows how good of a person he is.
Love this from P&P: “One has got all the goodness, and the other all the appearance of it.” Reminds me so of my Nana, who was very stern & strict & yet kindest of all. Believe in good.

Everyone has a purpose–many purposes. Just like Elon. His purposes can be summed up in this one quote he’s stated before: “There have to be reasons that you get up in the morning and you want to live.” Everyone has gifts and talents. When we use these gifts, we are already doing what we came here to do. Watch that video by Ralph Smart–he sums up these facts pretty well. And remember something: you are here for a reason.
Hi, I’m Johnna
I’m an artist from Shreveport, LA who learned the art of wire wrapping gems and minerals into jewelry from Grammy winning musician, Daryl Thompson, who became like a father to me.
He is the one who intrudoced me to the healing world of crystals and I have been learning every since.
This world is ancient but can be applied to modern day times.
My life is hectic–I work from home, am mothering a kitten who almost died, and am living the life of my dreams.
However, we always have to stay grounded and what keeps me grounded is working with the healing gifts of the mineral kingdom to create something.
Every single one of my jewelry designs has a person that is meant just for it.

I remember sitting with Daryl in his shop one day while he was wrapping something in 14K gold-filled wire for someone. I'd just started learning how to wire wrap and was not anywhere close to the level I am at now. In fact, I was very self-conscious about my...
Hyalite opal is an unusual gem that is beautiful in its own way. Many contain trace amounts of uranium which enable the gem to glow under a UV light. I have a small piece in my own collection that I scored at a gem show in Atlanta back in 2019. Recently, I had a...
Black spinel is one of many types of spinel, but it has its own unique beauty and elegance. I have been able to get my hands on two beautifully cut gemstones and am debating on keeping one for myself. These gems (in my tweet below) are cut and faceted with the rose...
Topaz is a gem that has legends and science weaving together the brilliance of this gem. Earlier this year, I applied for a scholarship with the Gemological Institution of America. That got rejected--just found out today. I want to learn gemology--not so I can...
I have been wanting to review Maye Musk’s book, A Woman Makes A Plan for some time now. I actually planned to buy it but it came to me as a gift. This sat as a draft in my blog for a good minute. I think a part of the reason why was that I hope that I can write a...
