Silicon Carbide Is Really Pretty

Carborndum sounds like some type of car part but it is actually a really beautiful and light mineral. By light I mean that its fragile.

Carborundum is a compound of silicon and carbon, however it does not occur in nature–or if it does, it is considered rare moissanite.

This mineral has been artificially made since 1983 and is often used as an abrasive for (drumroll please) things like car brakes, car clutches and ceramic plates in bulletproof vests. I wonder if Tesla uses this mineral in some of its production.

Moissanite is found in very small amounts and it’s usually in meteorites, corundum (ruby, sapphire) deposits.

Even though this mineral is rare on earth, it is very common in space. It’s a form of stardust found in carbon-rich stars.

Although it’s manmade, this mineral thought to bring light into all areas of our lives. It reminds you of your intuitive gifts and to trust yourself while linking the chakras.

Whether or not you believe in the mystical side of the mineral kingdom, these minerals do make us think of a nebula in space–those rainbow colors against a black void.

Hi, I’m Johnna

I’m an artist from Shreveport, LA who learned the art of wire wrapping gems and minerals into jewelry from Grammy winning musician, Daryl Thompson, who became like a father to me.

He is the one who intrudoced me to the healing world of crystals and I have been learning every since.

This world is ancient but can be applied to modern day times.

My life is hectic–I work from home, am mothering a kitten who almost died, and am living the life of my dreams.

However, we always have to stay grounded and what keeps me grounded is working with the healing gifts of the mineral kingdom to create something.

Every single one of my jewelry designs has a person that is meant just for it.

Working With Platinum For The First Time

What is Hyalite Opal And Is It Radioactive?

A few months ago, I came across a photo of this glow in the dark opal. Some of the research I was reading up on said that it glowed due to low levels of uranium in the opal, which is a pretty rare opal. It sounded unreal and I mentally put the gem on my bucket list of...

Chalcanthite: A Toxic Blue Copper Flower

Chalcanthite: A Toxic Blue Copper Flower

This vibrant blue crystal in my neon gloved palm is derived from the Greek words, chalkos, and anthos--meaning copper flower. Chalcanthite is a water-soluble sulfate mineral. This means that it will melt in water--and due to its high concentration of copper, it is...

Working With Hyalite

Hyalite opal is an unusual gem that is beautiful in its own way. Many contain trace amounts of uranium which enable the gem to glow under a UV light. I have a small piece in my own collection that I scored at a gem show in Atlanta back in 2019. Recently, I had a...
